Anne Garretson

Anne is a self-taught artist. She earned a Bachelors of Science in environmental conservation from the University of New Hampshire and Master of Education in adult experiential learning from Boston University. She spent many years living in New Hampshire before settling in New York’s Finger Lakes in 1986. In 2004 Anne raised her first of many puppies that become guide dogs for the blind or service dogs for autistic children. She has worked as an outdoor education instructor, college program administrator and veterinary hospital manager. All the while, she has pursued her longtime, parallel career as an artist.

Anne began exhibiting her landscape photography in the early 1980's and quilts in the late 1990’s. From a very young age she embraced her Rochester, NY and Eastman Kodak roots by capturing natural light imagery, processing and printing from black and white film. With the evolution of the medium from film to digital technology she gravitated to quilting. What she missed of the quiet and magic in the darkroom, she found with the meditative, serenity of stitching. In the early years of transformation from photographer to quilter Anne incorporated her images in her pieces. Many of her early quilts feature cyanotypes, heat transfers and ink-jet prints. Her recent work leaves the photographs aside, but the impact is still there. All the years she spent ignoring color, seeing instead shape, line and light to create her high-contrast, black and white photographs has had a lasting influence on her quilts.

Anne’s designs are expressions of a singular moment or a compilation of memories, just as photographs capture time. Her work utilizes color, commercially patterned fabrics and quilt stitching to create contrast and visual texture. Her studio floor is never without at least one dog.
